Challenging the stereotype of Indians as uncompromising conservationists, more than 200 individual Navajo landowners have quietly leased 1,440 acres to Hydro Resources Inc., an Albuquerque company that plans to mine uranium ore from a local aquifer (a layer of water-bearing rock). The company has promised a lucrative payoff: more than $40,000 for each property it leases, plus royalties as high as 25% on the sale of the uranium ore. For some Navajo landowners that could translate into more than $1 million a year--a nice paycheck anywhere, but especially in a region with double-digit unemployment...

...drugs work pretty much the way the old ones do. Aspirin and other NSAIDs block production of substances called prostaglandins, which are among the most versatile molecules in the body. Among other things, prostaglandins trigger uterine contractions during birth; generate a layer of mucus that protects the stomach from its acids; and cause blood particles called platelets to form clots--a mixed blessing, since the clots that help a wound heal can also lead to a heart attack...

...Generation X. Wearing black Gap turtlenecks and sipping lattes, the archetypal Gen Xers project an image that is hip and urbane. Disaffected with politics, cynical of pop culture, they are eager to catalogue the offenses of the baby boomers who inflated the debt and pitted the ozone layer. Their angst for the future is contagious. Until you see its paradox...

Yet Harvard golden boy Matt Damon sheds layer upon layers of complexity until finally we reach the core of his character near the movie's end. The film itself is nothing particularly exceptional. Director Gus Van Sant prefers a straight-up telling of the tale--there's little to distract you from the fable playing out on screen. --Soman S. Chainani...

...stomach another mussel), clams, and, impossibly enough, more calamari drown a sizeable platter. A spicier, more complex version of the calamari appetizer's tomato sauce married the flavors of the fish. There was indeed risotto underneath the shellfish, though it was only made accessible after much digging. Layers of clothing were shed in the grueling process. A word of advice: it is an exercise in absurd and repetitive gluttony to order either mussels or calamari as an appetizer followed by this seafood risotto. Veal Saltimbocca, of questionable relation to its somersaulting, juggling epinome, is scallopinied and topped with melted mozzarella...
