...science, so I'm not disturbed by the fundamental arrangement. (I am told by a friend from Adams House that Irene was utterly horrified when this was revealed to her.) But as a result of many years of violent GI-ing with harsh abrasives and caustic merchandize, the upper layer of fine plastic has been eroded away, exposing the layer of textiles below. Now this leads to two hateful features: First of all, I object to having ravelings of socks in my food, however sterile they may be. But worse yet, the porous fabric becomes impregnated with organic remains...
Roberto Rossellini's The Miracle, filmed in 1948 and now current as part of a two-hour, three-layer omnibus titled Ways of Love (TIME, Dec. 18), is second-rate Rossellini despite a virtuoso performance by Anna Magnani. Performing a minor acting miracle herself, she makes almost credible her role as an insane peasant woman who believes she is to bear a holy child fathered by Saint Joseph...
...trouble with such complicated chambers is that they operate only for a brief period after the air has been rarefied. Brookhaven's simple chamber works continuously. It consists of a metal plate standing on a layer of dry ice and covered with black velvet for better visibility. On top of the plate sits an open-ended glass cylinder anywhere from 5 to 17 inches in diameter. A second metal plate with a layer of felt cemented to its under side is placed on the cylinder. On top of the whole apparatus is a tray of water at room temperature...

At some point in its downward motion it makes the air supersaturated. In this sensitive layer, cosmic rays or other fast-moving atomic particles leave trails that show up in a flashlight beam as brilliant white streaks...
...much beyond a floppy bush hat and an armband. At another place I saw men building one of those Beau Geste forts which dot the delta. They were using salvaged bricks, mortared with mud. When the lookout tower is high enough they will face it with a thin layer of cement that will keep out water, but not much else. Said a French officer sadly: "It won't stop a bazooka." (Last week Communists using a bazooka breached one of these forts...
