...preprogrammed path all the way to its touchdown. If it encounters a large boulder, a deep crevice, too steep a slope or high winds upon landing, the craft could topple over and be forever silenced. It might conceivably even sink, antennas and all, into soft ground or a deep layer of dust...
Frittered Away. All of this might have been made into a trim mystery of the puzzle-solving variety except for two factors. The first is that it is based on a novel by Co-Scenarist Duerrenmatt, who must cloud the simplest scenes with a thick layer of existential gas. Director Schell, who helped anesthetize the script, compounds that error by directing in a style that is virtually an anthology of antique art-movie clichés as practiced on the Continent...
...mile San Andreas Fault, a deep fracture that runs from below the Mexican border to about 100 miles north of San Francisco, where it meets the Pacific Ocean. The fault is actually the boundary of two tectonic plates, huge sections of the earth's outer layer that are sliding in opposite directions. Kolzak's adaptation enables Epstein to seize a once shallow caricature of a clergyman and transform it into a complex, brooding performance. Karen Ross is a good Mrs. Alving, adding a layer of sophisticated and casual confidence to Ibsen's troubled widow. Stephen Kolzak as the tortured painter Oswald gives an excellent performance; his harrowing breakdown is the one scene where emotion transcends Ibsen's carefully orchestrated social commentaries. Sidney Atwood as Engstrand and Helena Snow as the ambitious Regina handle modernization...
