Metropolitan Pitirim was appearing on a new weekly show called Thoughts About the Eternal: Sunday Moral Sermon, which a layman had inaugurated the previous week. Pitirim's commentary, though as innocuous as a sermonette after an American late movie on television, was nonetheless historic: the first time in 72 years of Communist rule that a clergyman's sermon had been broadcast. Coming six weeks before President Mikhail Gorbachev's scheduled meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, the show underscored Soviet leaders' increasing tolerance of religious practice...
Chief among them is the Biblical Archaeology Review of Washington, a well- regarded layman's magazine, which has long berated the team for unconscionable foot dragging. In the latest issue, editor Herschel Shanks brands the new timetable "a hoax and a fraud." Shanks insists that "the scrolls will never be published by the current team" because the task is too huge. Mayer has been one of the educated layman's best guides to the covert worlds of Wall Street and finance. The Bankers (1974) was a best seller. More recent books include The Fate of the Dollar (1980) and The Money Bazaars...
...reform law is a brier patch of ambiguities, shifting rules and vanishing preferences. The tax code contains hundreds of changes this year, for which the IRS has published 48 new tax forms. At least one new IRS release is a hit: Publication 920, which explains tax reform in layman's language. Copies requested so far: 17 million...
