...layout doesn't tempt outsiders to poke around in places like Central Square. The buildings form a jarringly uncomplementary string of facades. Each business has developed independently. There isn't an architectural plan, historic tradition, emotional ambience or standard of quality to conform to. The smattering of fast-food franchises with their corny and tediously familiar fronts in Dunkin'-Donuts pink, Brigham's blue, white and red, and Jack-In-the-Box orange is accepted without any qualms. The only required feature seems to be functionality. A store that can supply "reliable shades and screens" is going to come...

More inscrutable, in another sense, is Joyce's correspondence. His letters helped enormously in discovering the schematic layout of Ulysses and some of the obscurities in Finnegan's Wake. But they also open up another realm for the scholars of hither and yon; they sketch out the tracery of ganglia and dendrons that made up Joyce's character, from the tip of his penis to the top of his cerebrating cells. ...Smith's paintings at the Green Gallery in 1961 used the simple, emblematic formats of ad layout-a disk, a heart, striped bands-but dissolved them in a feathery, airy film of brush strokes. Then he became interested in packages. Again, packaging was not iconic; it was the most abstract way of putting a product over, smooth and low-keyed, with a regular boxy shape. Paintings like Piano (1963) thrust out from the wall, the sloping canvas sides of the built box contradicted by the smaller fake boxes painted on it in Smith's cursive, soft handwriting, like...

...subtle homage to nature's irregularity continues on the inside too: there is hardly a right angle to be found in the entire building. Indeed, the interior layout seems so complicated as to be al most recklessly baroque. Yet Aalto holds off excess by designing every light fixture, door handle and stair tread to fit the whole - and suit the user...
