...garment constructed of yellow "Do Not Cross" tape by Erica Waddell '03 and the three untitled 9" x 12" photographs of a dirty wall, a puddle and a beach taken from unexpected angles by Shannon Stackhouse '00 (including "Untitled," the black-and-white print shown to the right), the layout of the works seemed to be somewhat haphazard, taking away from their individual effects. ...what haunts me equally about Nachtwey's work is how strikingly beautiful all these photographs are, and I'm not talking about beauty in some sick voyeuristic sense. The book itself is huge and heavy, with thick paper stock and stylish layout. Moreover, the photographs are finely printed and composed with an infallible eye for human misery: few of us could ever imagine the horrors that Nachtwey's subjects have seen, but he is a virtuoso at evoking pity. Says former design director Daniel Carter: "We wanted to come out and sound like we knew what we were talking about...
...some of the trials experienced in recent months by Kate Betts, 35, the newly installed editor in chief at Harper's Bazaar. Since September, when she assumed stewardship of the country's oldest fashion glossy, Betts has been plotting its complete redesign, transforming everything from the magazine's layout to its logo--replacing the elegant typeface with bold lettering that she hopes reflects a more youthful orientation. Formerly the fashion news director at Vogue, she succeeds Liz Tilberis, a beloved editor who died from ovarian cancer last April. Betts inherited a magazine that, despite earning praise for its sleek aesthetic...
