Comedienne Stritch punches out her lines with the raucous authority of a pneumatic drill, and in a number called Why Do the Wrong People Travel? she is a song blaster in the megaton range. Choreographer Joe Layton paces the show with wryly inventive dance sequences, notably a goofily spastic Beatnik Love Affair. An Italian wedding party that turns into a tourist trap is a hilarious cross-cultural spoof. But the S.S. Coronia is really a ship of the desert, and it is a long dry haul between oases...
...stories, particularly the experiences of an American wife (Jean Fenn) who loses her inhibitions under the Mediterranean sun. Sail Away is sometimes too reminiscent of the first Noel, and much of it seemed wooden to Boston critics. But Elaine Stritch, as the cruise hostess, is full of verve. Joe Layton's choreography is superb, and the lyrics are delightful, as when they ask the ultimate question on tourism...
...startling contrast to the chorus. Their expressiveness was moving, but I do not think it is correct here. As Oedipus, Archie Epps displayed a dazzling agility with the intricate melodies in an interpretation of Oedipus that communicated pathos and feeling rather than pride and firmness. As Tiresias, Bentley Layton had warmth and resonance, too, but made the jagged melodic line too fluid. Lacking great vocal strength, he presented a too apologetic Tiresias. The result of both solos was closer to the personal expressiveness of Carissimi's Jeptha than the square, forthright objectivity of Stravinsky's score...
