Great things were expected in the quarter-mile and they happened, but not from the men they were expected from. Putnam of Cornell jumped into the lead with the gun in the half-mile and it seemed as though he would maintain his position. Jones of Cornell and Paull of Pennsylvania started, but as they had run the mile before, it was not thought that they would place. Bodley of Pennsylvania attempted to pass Putnam at the beginning of the second quarter, but could not oust the Cornell man from the pole. Meanwhile H.
