...Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band would sound fresh, intelligent and original. Now, however, the band sounds like it steals from the talents of musicians such as Tom Petty. Live On, their new album, seems to be trying for a folk-rock-ballad like quality, with an overuse of the harmonica-lead guitar combination. In most instances, this tactic fails. "Was," "Oh Well" and "Losing Kind" have the sound of recycled Bon Jovi B-sides. The lead guitar spurs the song's movement with redundant and basic chords, while the bassline is a simple mirror of the lead. Shepherd's vocals appear...
Their offense will be lead by junior forward Hilary Matson. Matson's speed up front makes her both a powerful offensive weapon and an amazing decoy...
...hauntingly melodious songs, "Church on Tuesday" is a tremendous treat. The song recalls favorites such as Purple's "Vasoline" and "Pretty Penny", with the framing of Weiland's somber vocals around Dean Deleo's masterful lead guitar. He is a talented journalist working to shed light on a threat all too well understood by women living under the Talisban regime in Afghanistan, by Israeli shopkeepers, schoolchildren and commuters, and--increasingly in the aftermath of the World Trade Center and African embassy bombings--by average American citizens...
...forward to the Head of the Charles "to compete with the international rowers." The women's program, coached by Joe Wilhelm, are also a fairly young team with superb athletic talent. The champ eight has four returning varsity rowers, but Wilhelm feels wary about his young team: "inexperience can lead to inconsistency." However, the novice crew was 8 and 2 last year, with talent that bodes well for the future. "It's great to have a regatta this size in our own back yard," says Wilhelm. But as to winning the regatta, he says, "with crew, you never know...
