Hopefully these tactics will cause our enemies to die or, at the very least, make them sad. Either way, having so many potentially painful and expensive leaden objects in our arsenal is the only thing that allows us as Americans to sleep well at night, even though that kid with the stereo through my firedoor keeps me awake anyway...
...outsize and difficult. "They never find oil in great places, say at San Remo or on the Costa Brava," is the way he begins a yarn about an offshore drilling rig in Alaska. The 250-meter tower was constructed horizontally on land, then towed out through cold, leaden seas and righted on site by flooding chambers at the base. On paper the task seemed simple; in practice it required judgment, skill and luck that almost defy imagination. Some Third World jobs defy common sense. The designers of a bridge over an Indian river fail to account for winds that shake...
...Their walk is slow, for they are dead weary . . . Every line and sag of their bodies speaks their inhuman exhaustion. On their shoulders and backs they carry heavy steel tripods, machine-gun barrels, leaden boxes of ammunition. Their feet seem to sink into the ground from the overload they are bearing. But today's cognoscenti find the dew of nostalgia on these pictures, then wink and say, "They're so bad, they're good." Smart directors stoke the trend with camp updates of the olden turkeys. In Tobe Hooper's remake of the 1953 Invaders...
...lengthy roster of new crime fighters is, if nothing else, diverse. Robert Wagner is leaden as ever as a high-living investigator for an insurance company in the dreary Lime Street. The Insiders uses a rock score to enliven the weekly adventures of a hip free-lance reporter and his partner who go undercover for stories. The apparent model, again, is Miami Vice, but the show looks more like an '85 version of The Mod Squad. The season's biggest howler is Hollywood Beat, another Miami Vice-influenced show about a pair of undercover cops who patrol seedy Hollywood Boulevard...
