Sorry tactics indeed. Cussler's book doesn't even pass as good satire--his humor is too leaden and his heroes are not appealing enough to succeed as caricatures of a frequently caricatured genre. Stuck in a no-man's land between the superbly serious thrillers of John LeCarre and the outlandishly clever spy fantasies of Ian Fleming, Raise the Titanic! flounders along its muddily mediocre...
DESPITE THESE occasional stabs at humor, Dick and Jane ultimately fails because of its heavy-handedness. Fred Koenekamp's leaden photography is yet another culprit. Examining the division between black and white, his camera focuses on a group of dancing black employees in Charley's office, then roams to depict the slow, stinking affluence at an aerospace company party. The camera's eye, like the script, lacks subtlety. The film editing, too, obviously emphasizes the difference between rich and poor neighborhoods, by switching from Dick and Jane's ivory dream house to a dark pool hall frequented by the unemployed...
...grip on its soul. There were cheers and gasps of admiration a few months ago for those square-riggers in the Hudson, spectacular symbols of a graceful youth. Later there were good-natured chuckles when the regulars of George Washington's command sloshed by boat across the now leaden and polluted waters of the Delaware River-as they had 200 years ago-to surprise the Hessians in Trenton the day after Christmas. In most hearts there was a residue of admiration for the courage that began this experiment in liberty...
...picking Bob Dole, 53, Ford signed on the most accomplished gunslinger in the party, a man who makes his points not with obloquy or the cement fist or leaden tongue of a Spiro Agnew, but with an acerbic wit that often leaves everyone but the victim laughing. Dole has characterized Senator Edmund Muskie as "a political Rip Van Winkle who awoke and started to attack Nixon," and he once dismissed former Attorney General Ramsey Clark as a "left-leaning marshmallow...
...down. Herbs and plants were extensively used in treatment. Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts Bay prescribed a paste of wood lice, while Cotton Mather-who together with Zabdiel Boylston brought inoculation to the colonies in 1721 to prevent serious cases of smallpox-condemned the use by Boston physicians of "Leaden Bullets," to be swallowed for "that miserable Distemper which they called the Twisting of the Guts." By the early 18th century, there were only two drugs known to be specific: cinchona bark for malaria, and mercury as an antisyphilitic agent. Dr. Benjamin Rush of Philadelphia (one of four physicians...
