...Under a leaden sky last week. 50 impatient newsmen gathered at the small outpost called Foothills on the border of Assam state and the North-East Frontier Agency. A light drizzle fell on a detail of the small-statured soldiers of the Assam Rifles. A knot of Indian government officials shifted position in the muddy street as they awaited the appearance of Tibet's Dalai Lama, who had now been more than a month on the trail-14 days in making his escape from the pursuing Red Chinese in Tibet (TIME, April 20), and a more leisurely 18 days...
Midway through the opening session of the 21st Communist Party Congress, the January sun broke through Moscow's leaden overcast. Bright rays streamed through the four-story windows of the Great Kremlin Hall and lit up the towering, 20-ft. statue of Lenin behind the platform and the short, round, balding figure at the speaker's stand below. "See!" cried Nikita Khrushchev, a talented ad-libber, thrusting aside his 46,000-word text. "Even the sun favors us. Nature smiles on the seven-year plan...
...symbols that are more like stencils and incidents too much like one another, Cock-a-Doodle Dandy has its amusing scenes and its fiery ones. Unhappily, in a quite un-Gaelic and ponderous production, there emerges nothing of the robustly comic playwright; the horseplay is elephantine, the darts are leaden cannonballs. What alone and all too stridently emerges is O'Casey's angry protest. Cock-a-Doodle Dandy, in any real sense, has still to be produced in New York...

But in Communist China, nearly everyone who is anyone reads the People's Daily of Peking-and for good reason. As the official organ of both party and government. the eight-page daily (circ. 700,000) is handbook and scripture to right-thinking Chinese Reds...
Justice Voelker knows the law and loves it, but his writing is as limp as a watch by Dali. All vigils are "lonely," vistas are always "sylvan." time "slips by on leaden wings." Yet, despite the leaden feet of the cliches, the book does move. Author Voelker's characters come most alive in the courtroom, in the thrust and parry of cross-examination and in the springing of tactical ambushes and legal traps by opposing counsel. It is quite ordinary writing but good entertainment, and few readers will turn aside until the fate of Lieut. Frederic Manion is finally...
