Raintree County (MGM) begins in tedium and ends, 168 leaden minutes later, in apathy. Montgomery Clift, talking through his nose and expressing sensitivity of soul by seldom looking other cast members in the eye, jitters through the role of John Shawnessy, hero of the late Ross Lockridge Jr.'s bestselling 1948 novel. Represented to be a kind of rustic, 20-year-old Candide of pre-Civil War Indiana, 37-year-old Clift goes lurching through a swamp in search of a magical "rain tree," supposedly planted years before by Johnny Appleseed. Whether the tree bears knowledge, truth or just...

...rainy afternoon skies hovered in leaden gloom above the modernistic A.F.L.-C.I.O. headquarters building on Washington's 16th Street. James Riddle Hoffa, president-elect of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, scissored briskly up to the front entrance. A photographer asked him for just "one cheerful smile." Radio astronomy had its beginnings in the U.S., but it has been brought to its highest point in Britain, whose frequently leaden skies handicap optical telescopes. It is still a young science, with surprises coming thick and fast. A vast assortment of radio waves filters down from the sky. Some of the waves come from nearby planets and the sun. Others come from patches of faintly luminous gas, or from the clouds of cold hydrogen drifting among the stars. The new telescope is fitted for recording all these faint whispers on wave lengths from ten centimeters to about 20 meters...

...production is due to Musical Director Landon Young. He plays the piano, conducts the instruments, singers, and chorus, hums through comb-and-tissue-paper, and coordinates the other unlikely effects that intersperse the opera. The stage direction by Margaret Fairbank is usually enlivening, although there are some leaden moments. There is, however, a good deal of tension built up when the rain comes and the ranchers dance...

...night last week when eight bells sounded midnight aboard the British factory whaling ship Southern Venturer, breasting the sullen swells of the Antarctic Ocean, it meant "They're off!" The 1957 whaling season was officially open. All hands were ready for the first leviathan. Soon from over the leaden horizon came one of the mother ship's brood of smaller ships, towing a monstrous fin whale by its tail. Then began a mechanized dissection such as Melville did not imagine even in his most tortured dreams...
