Last month Herbert Hoover, who has been trying to convince his fellow Republican bigwigs that the best way to keep 17,000,000 Republican voters together in lean times is to supply them with a creed, proposed to the National Committee in Chicago that they call a party conference to formulate a positive program. Fearful of the splits this might disclose, the com mittee voted instead to have its creed drafted by the loo most representative Republicans in the U. S. All that remained was for the Republican executive committee to find 100 such suitable philosophers. So last week...
...entitled to a good reception, for plans are afoot for a French loan to erect a great Polish armament and heavy industry centre on the Vistula River. Hence Warsaw gave M. Delbos a festive few days. But Poland is notoriously half in Hitler's arms, and long, lean Colonel Josef Beck, Polish Foreign Minister and player of ticktacktoe with General Hermann Wilhelm Goring, was adamant against obliging M. Delbos by so much as a communique lauding the League of Nations. The most that grudging Beck would do was sign with Delbos a communique that "both nations are equally devoted...
...coach Premier Camille Chautemps and Foreign Minister Yvon Delbos at London in the opening hands of a game for breathtakingly high stakes. Green as any card table was the big board at No. 10 Downing Street, and German diplomatic cards were dealt out by Viscount Halifax. Quietly, this lean, cadaverous British statesman laid the secret demands which Adolf Hitler and Herman Wilhelm Goring recently made to him (TIME. Suzanne Eisendieck was born in Danzig of Polish parents. Her father was a lumber dealer. For two years she studied in Berlin, then moved on to Paris with exactly 300 francs in her thin purse. She got a Montparnasse garret so small that she had to lean halfway out of the window to paint at all. Already she had developed a style. She wanted to paint the mythical world of 1900 (eight years before she was born), when ladies wore feather boas and bright feathers in their hats, when gentlemen had whiskers and drank champagne. Because she was much prettier...
Richard Whittemore does a good job as Tommy Harrow, the lean, nonchalant hero. Miriam Clark, borrowed from the Erskine School, puts considerable charm into the role of the candid huntress. L. John Profit, whom the club calls its veteran, does an excellent portrayal of the traditional canny Scott. Peggy Eastall is more than satisfactory as the efficient manager of the concern: the one who comes closest to getting the bills paid. The acting is simplified, since the characters are really types. Even so, William Judd and Harry Buckman are a little stiff in their roles of brokers; and Robert Markewich...
