JERUSALEM: Shimon Peres on Tuesday broke his silence to blast the proposals of his successor, Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu. At a special session of parliament on Tuesday, Peres dismissed Netanyahu's offer to withdraw Israeli troops from Syria-controlled Lebanon in exchange for a secure border as "laughable." Peres also tore into Netanyahu for his unenthusiastic offers to the Palestinians, asking what Israel has to gain by insulting Yasser Arafat. The attack is just the sort of loyal opposition Peres is expected to provide; to date, he's been missing in action, letting other members of the party mount...

...with Jordan's King Hussein, said Israel was willing to hold negotiations "on all outstanding matters." That opens the way for discussion about the status of the Golan Heights, captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast War. Other outstanding matters include Israel's occupation of a southern strip of Lebanon and continued Hamas attacks on Israel from within Lebanon, which is controlled by Syria. Hussein is well-poised to play a central role in mediating an Israeli-Syrian peace, and is actively seeking that chance. Better than any other Arab leader, Hussein seems to understand the new prime minister...

JERUSLEM: Did Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meet secretly with a representative of Syrian President Hafez Assad just before his trip to Washington, D.C. last month? The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that the two men met in early July to discuss the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon. According to Haaretz, Netanyahu offered Assad a deal in which Israeli troops would pull out if Syria guaranteed certain security arrangements along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Netanyahu's government flatly denies that the meeting took place. "It didn't happen," said David Bar Illan, Netanyahu's spokesman. If it did, the Lebanese...

...will blow up." The plane landed in Miami at about 3 p.m. ET Friday. Police rushed the plane and took Ibrahim into custody. Francisco Garcia, a Spanish government spokesman, reported that Ibrahim ended up on the flight a few days after he escaped from a refugee camp in Southern Lebanon. As for the motivation, FBI spokesman Paul Philip said Ibrahim "simply did not want to go to Havana. He wanted to go to the U.S." He got his wish: even though none of the 232 people aboard the plane was hurt, Ibrahim will be charged with air piracy and will...

LONDON: Amnesty International has determined that Israeli artillery forces deliberately shelled a U.N. base last April in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defense Forces have maintained that they were aiming for Hizballah guerrillas nearby but missed their target; former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres said again last week that the Israeli military did not know the U.N. position had become a camp of refugees. Despite Peres' claim that "nothing was done intentionally," the Amnesty International report released Wednesday finds that the Israeli Defense Forces had deliberately attacked the Qana compound April 18, killing 91 civilians in violation of international rules...
