After Japan's frustrated voters handed power to the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in the Aug. 30 parliamentary election, many had hopes that the country's new leaders would begin to solve some of the country's intractable economic problems. What Japan needs today is fiscal stimulus that stresses the DPJ program to shift Japan to consumer-led growth. Once the economy truly recovers, that will be time to focus on deficit reduction. Burma desperately needs prodding toward a real democratic transition. Without the full participation of the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi in the coming 2010 election, I don't think that will occur.
