Under the Curtis-Martin ownership the Inquirer started downhill to failure. Combining it with the famed old Public Ledger failed to slow its descent. Pledge Brown was never employed by either the morning or the evening Public Ledger. So far as I know, he never did any work of any kind for either of these newspapers. He did, however, some years ago, work for another Philadelphia newspaper, and early this summer an article carrying his by-line did appear in still another Philadelphia newspaper...

Next morning, on rereading Brown's article, Editor Page decided "it was too good to be true." He telephoned the Forum, which reported that both The Literary Digest and the Philadelphia Public Ledger had recommended Brown's work. As a final check Editor Page insisted on comparing his article with the Forum's. They were almost identical...
