...drawing rooms of the rich and great. But the order forbids its members to accept ecclesiastical honors, keeps them quietly and efficiently on the move, their minds sharp, their spirits obedient, their black-cassocked persons unattached to any one locality. Its Superior General (at present Polish Wlodimir Ledochowski) is elected for life, is often called the "Black Pope" because he wears a black habit and possesses powers which, in a limited way, resemble the Holy Father...
Like a monarch with a cabinet, the "Black Pope" of the Society of Jesus has a curia of seven assistants. All must live in Rome. Last week "Black Pope" Wlodimir Ledochowski, able, rugged Pole, summoned Very Rev. Zacheus J. Maher of San José, Calif, to be his assistant for North America. San Francisco-born Jesuit Maher has been president of Santa Clara University...
...three years of teaching, four of theology and one of ascetic theology. Rev. Aloysius Henry Rohde, assistant to the Jesuit provincial in Chicago, will be the school's temporary rector until a full one is appointed by that most formidable cleric, the Superior General or "Black Pope," Wlodomir Ledochowski in Rome. The 80 students who will study under eight priests at West Baden College will live in ordinary Jesuit routine - up at 5 a. m., to bed at 9 p. m., plenty of work, prayers, meditation. They may well be appalled in contemplating the hotel's Pompeian Court...

He has large spiritual and admin- istrative authority, even to setting aside (but not altering) the Constitutions written by St. Ignatius Loyola and associates and adopted in 1558. The General lives in Rome, is advised by assistants from various...
Fordham University. Jesuit colleges select and induct their presidents quietly, without public fanfare. In the refectory of Fordham University (New York), last week, an order from the Very Rev. Vlodimir Ledochowski, S.J., Superior General at Rome, was read at mealtime. Rev. William J. Duane, S.J., 63, having completed the six years in office permitted by canon law, got up from the head of the table and bowed to Rev. Aloysius G. Hogan, S.J., 37, who took his place. Next day Father Duane sailed for Rome. It is not expected that he will do any more educational work...
