TAIWANESE legend has it that whenever the muddy Chuo Shui River runs clear, great events follow. Recently, the Chuo Shui ran clear for the first time since 1949, when Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's shattered armies retreated to Taiwan from the mainland. The event apparently portended this time was Peking's venture in Ping Pong diplomacy and Washington's warm response. One thing is clear besides the water: any real rapprochement between the U.S. and the mainland regime hinges on Taiwan, a verdant island of 14 million people. As Peking's Premier Chou En-lai recently...
...Legend has it that in his lifetime St. Yves of Brittany, the patron saint of lawyers [May 3], was obsessed with the legal profession's lack of a counterpart for the physicians' Luke and the soldiers' George. He journeyed to Rome and put the matter before the Pope. His Holiness directed Yves to go around the Church of St. John Lateran blindfolded and, after saying certain specific prayers, grasp a saintly figure, which would become the lawyers' patron. Yves, catching hold of an image, cried: "This is our saint!" Removing his blindfold, he was horrified...
...Black and Tan conflict. At 16 he holed up with Irish Republican Army soldiers in Dublin's General Post Office during the Easter Rebellion of 1916. Fifteen rebels were shot and thousands deported after British shells ended the uprising, but Lemass was released. According to Dublin legend, "the cops gave him a kick in the arse and told him to go home to his Mom." He went underground instead. When De Valera's Fianna Fail Party assumed power in 1932, Lemass became the youngest member of the Cabinet. As Prime Minister he tore away at the economic aspects...
Despite its faults, Owen Wingrave is a stimulating example of how technology, tape and the small screen may someday acquire a highly useful role in opera. A switch to slow motion, with an accompanying abrupt shift from color to monochrome, helps evoke real horror as the legend is retold of how a young ancestor of Owen's was killed by his father for refusing to fight a friend. Limitations of time and space virtually dissolve as the camera crosscuts between-or juxtaposes on a split screen-characters who are in fact separated by days and miles. This enabled Britten...
Contrary to popular legend, however, it was undergraduates rather than graduate students to whom Kissinger was most attracted. And it was a striking fondness, borne of the fact that undergraduates were intelligent and creative young people whose minds and interests were as yet unformed, not the graspy, greedy things who needed his association and friendship for the sake of their careers. Kissinger spent more time with undergraduates and, for a period, lunched with a group of them regularly. But by the late '60's, his non-Cambridge interests so dominated him that he saw little of academic life...
