...university is a temple to meritocracy, where the religious ardor of intellectualism purifies us of our class distinctions. To the extent that class does exist, it checks itself at Johnston gate. If legacy status gave you leg up in the admissions process, no one asks you about it once you’re here. Overt social elitism would be as shocking as racism, and condemned as such. Even some final clubs shield themselves from the shrill accusation of “classism” by waiving dues for cash-strapped members...

After some impossibly frigid and rainy April days, Massachusetts weather finally decided to give us a break. The sun has been shining and suddenly students can bare some leg without freezing to death. To honor the triumphant emergence of spring, a group of friends and I headed out to the Quad for some sunning action yesterday. At last, a chance for my naturally olive-toned skin to become even more olive-y. This tanning endeavor was however cut short by a most unwelcome intruder...

A "hard muscular girl" is how someone described the typical Hopper woman, "sturdy of leg and breast, bulging in her clothes." True enough. During his rehabilitation and physical therapy, he began swimming, and by 1996 had landed a spot on the U.S. Paralympics swim team. As the 2000 Sydney Games approached, Register was running again, ready to tackle the long jump - an event for which he was an All-American at the University of Arkansas. In Sydney, he won the silver medal. "At that point, my life kind of came full circle," he says. Register's experience...

Like Schwarzenegger, Crist wasn't always known as an ideological moderate. As a state senator in the 1990s, he was called "Chain Gang Charlie" for co-sponsoring a law that revived prison labor in leg irons. But Crist says his hard line on criminals is simply part of what also drove him to renew ex-convicts' voter rights. Instead of ideology, "fundamental fairness was always spoken about in our home," says Crist, 50, sitting in shirtsleeves in his office, beneath a painting of his Greek immigrant grandfather when he was a shoe-shine boy. He speaks daily on the phone...
