...Achilles outside the walls of Troy to allay his grief at the death of his friend Patroclus. Now, just in time to coincide with the goings on in Montreal, two classicists and sports fans, M.I. Finley of England's Cambridge University and H.W. Picket of the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, have culled through ancient records, reviewed the writings of poets and philosophers from Pindar to Plato to reconstruct just what the first games were like. Their account is enlightening. For sheer ballyhoo, bitterness and confusion, the ancient games resemble the modern Olympics much more than anyone might...

The royal motto: Je main-tiendrai (I shall maintain). Juliana studied law, literature, economics and Islamic history at Leiden University. Queen since 1948, she has kept extremely well informed about Dutch and world affairs and enjoys close relations with Socialist Premier Joop den Uyl. ...motto of "Sweetness, Flowers and Understanding" coupled with good deeds apparently won over many Dutch voters who had been growing impatient with youthful protesters. Having opened its first European inn two years ago at Leiden, The Netherlands, the company is building 15 more in Belgium, England, Austria, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Greece and Luxembourg; it is also drawing plans for an additional 47. Esso Motor Hotels, a subsidiary of Jersey Standard, already has 41 outlets in Europe and expects to have 70 soon...
Shrinking Output. Internationally, the wide-ranging reassessment of Rembrandt's prodigious output has resulted in a marked contraction of the number of oil paintings unquestionably attributed to the Leiden miller's gifted son. In 1923, the German art historian W. R. Valentiner listed some 700 genuine Rembrandts. In 1942, the Dutch scholar Abraham Bredius pared the total to about 620, and last year the German Kurt Bauch brought the number to 550. The end is not in sight. To be published in the U.S. in October is an other, still more definitive catalogue by The Netherlands' Horst...
