...introductory remarks yesterday, it is very true that "Common Ground" does not present "a full spectrum of opinions" on these issues. It is not clear, however, how that fact affects the event's legitimacy. A series of angry, polemical arguments presenting extremist views would not, in our opinion, lend itself to the atmosphere of conciliation and compromise that we hoped to create in this conference. Mail-order magnates are well aware of customers' cravings for extraordinary items and use them to lend a glamorous cachet to listings of tableware and nightgowns. Neiman-Marcus, for instance, has offered everything from his-and-her airplanes to a paleontological safari in Utah to baby Asian elephants. Sakowitz, its Texas rival, has presented such opulent entries as a bathtub full of diamonds, a chateau in a French wine district and a personalized offshore oil rig. Says Comptroller of the Currency Conover: "For me the most worrisome difference between the last recession and this one is the growth of international lending. Foreign loans by American banks now amount to $320 billion, a total that is 80% more than it was only five years ago." A speaker in Atlanta with firsthand knowledge of many of the new foreign customers was not reassuring. Said former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger from the podium: "In many countries...

Beams of electrons have long been used to study the structural details of tiny organisms, but DNA and RNA, the molecules of the genes, do not lend themselves to such inspection. They consist mainly of light, simple atoms, which produce extremely faint images in an electron microscope. If they are subjected to extra-long exposures in the electron beams or are stained to improve contrast, their structure becomes distorted. Klug overcame this major obstacle by manipulating the images mathematically with the help of a computer. Among the viral structures discovered by his new method was that of a common plant...
