...wistful generalities such as “I want to breathe again / I want to dream / I want to float a quote like Martin Luther King,” and stuff that just makes no sense, like, “I want to bathe in grape / must swim the length of the milky way.” Stipe’s whiny drone lends itself to unspecific philosophical maxims, so R.E.M. has always gotten away with more than a normal amount of this sort of thing, but many of the lyrics seem to shy away from actually making any points...
...only wishes it were longer. The circumscribed length of Kuper's version of "The Jungle" dispenses with much of the minor character development - so much so that it gets a bit confusing. It also lacks the details of atrocity that made each of Sinclair's chapters seem like a punch in the gut. On the other hand, Kuper wisely does away with the anti-climactic Socialist agitprop that made up the last few chapters of the original book. Instead he ends on the hope of a new beginning. While certainly no substitute for the original, Kuper's adaptation makes...
...stretched from door-to-door. Shortly thereafter, four men slipped between cars and entered ours at the far end, where they remained huddled prior to entering the next station. I had lived in New York for 18 years and never been mugged. I’d even cast aside the questions from blockmates about how dangerous the city can be, proudly proclaiming how comfortable I was alone on the subway...
...technology are not on the studios' side. Just as the Napster phenomenon appeared to come out of nowhere, the next generation of file-sharing software is already in utero. Last month computer scientists at Caltech set a new data-transmission record: they achieved the equivalent of downloading a full-length feature film in 4 sec. It's a bumpy road to acceptance for any disruptive entertainment technology, from piano rolls to the VCR. "One thing you can count on in Hollywood is fear of change," says Warren Lieberfarb, the man who launched the DVD. But as Lieberfarb's profit-rich...
