Poignant Atrocity. The morbid embrace is but one flash in a carnival of images on the single Lenten theme with which lonesco and Director Karl Heinz Stroux hold the audience alternately uneasy and tittering for two unbroken hours. Death, along with madness, is the heartland of the absurd today, recalling how, three and four centuries ago, the dance of death, along with the ship of fools, was the obsession of so much European painting and writing. For The Triumph of Death, lonesco reaches not only to Albert Camus, but also back to the Bruegel painting that bears the same title...

...atmosphere of ecclesiastical calm. But out side the palace were 70 priests (some of them in sport coats and red ties), part of a protesting "shadow symposium" that had been hastily convened at a nearby hostel. Bullhorn in hand, French Dominican Jean Cardonnel, a fiery leftist whose Lenten address helped inspire last year's "May events" in Paris, set the tone of the protest. Some of the Negroes and Puerto Ricans who make up a majority in the parish were distressed at losing the church and school, but Sheen promised to support...

While declaring that abstinence was no longer binding under pain of sin, the bishops urged the faithful to preserve the custom, particularly during the Lenten season, as "an outward sign of inward spiritual values...

Just hearing it described last winter in Gstaad, Switzerland, made it sound like a perfect spring vacation. As Robin Duke, wife of U.S. Ambassador to Spain Angier Biddle Duke, pictured the annual fair in Seville, it was the essence of Spain, a six-day post-Lenten fiesta with superb bull fighting, Andalusian flamenco dancing all night long in the fair's tent village, colorful parades and a marvelous ball. What's more, the Duchess of Alba would be all too glad to have Jacqueline Kennedy as her guest...
