Banging Plates. If the conference posed problems for the Soviet leaders, they were certainly putting up a breezy and self-confident front. Attired in a natty gray single-breasted suit and a red tie, Party Chief Leonid Brezhnev led a covey of Politburo members on a four-hour tour of Automation 69, an international exhibit of new electronic equipment that is being held in Moscow's Sokolniki Park. In a jovial mood, Brezhnev singled out pretty girls for handshakes, embraced Communist exhibitors with Russian bear hugs, and chatted amiably at Western stands. ...Demonstration. Just as if his emissaries had not aided the changes, Soviet Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev sent his warm congratulations to Husák. So did most of the other East Bloc leaders. Predictable protests came from the West, the loudest of them voiced by the West European Communists, who had seen in Dubček's liberal form of Communism an opportunity to enhance their own appeal to voters in their own countries...

That Yellow Gang. Echoes of the clash reached Eastern Europe last week. In Budapest, at the first full-dress Warsaw Pact meeting since the invasion of Czechoslovakia, a high-powered Soviet delegation led by Premier Aleksei Kosygin and Party Chief Leonid Brezhnev pressed their allies to sign an already prepared document condemning the Chinese. Rumanian President Nicolae Ceausescu refused, standing his ground in the face of Brezhnev's charges that he was "taking the side of that yellow gang." The meeting's official session, in fact, lasted only two hours, the shortest on record...

...motives has not helped matters. Some teachers in Moscow schools told their pupils last week that the gunman was a rejected cosmonaut who had a grudge against his successful colleagues. Other Russians say that the gunman was a member of a conspiracy and that his target was Party Boss Leonid Brezhnev. In fact, there is speculation that the gunman fired on the auto carrying Cosmonaut Georgy Beregovoy because his heavy jowls and bushy eyebrows resemble those of Brezhnev. The most prevalent rumor in Moscow has it that the shooting was the result of a plot by the Soviet military chiefs...
