Antony's Rome is equally unexpected. Triumvirate members Antony, Caesar and Lepidus meet around a heavy, morbid table behind a map of the Mediterranean region painted on the floor. The room has no walls, and one imagines it, like any proper war room, to be smoke-filled and poorly-lit. Like the soldiers in HRDC's fall production of Macbeth, members of Caesar's forces are dressed in tuxedos...

Sometimes virtues look better in retrospect. Antony died at a moment (30 B.C.) when Romans were already bitterly nostalgic for the austere virtues of the old republic. Antony represented a transition: he could live on bark and roots with his men when retreating out of the Alps before Lepidus (the old Roman virtues); and then he would anticipate the later empire by collapsing into a feckless boozehound (the new style). Anyway, Rome's embrace -- like America's now -- had grown vast and "multicultural." The republic's old purity of spirit had dissolved. Diversity overwhelmed simplicity. ...Robin Wagner, and the Roman scenes in Antony enjoy the same upstage set as many of those in Caesar. Jane Greenwood's costumes for the Romans in both plays are the same or similar. And the three important characters who are present in both plays--Antony, Octavious, and Lepidus--have the virtue of being portrayed by the same actors...

...both plays, William Larsen is capable as the weakest of the triumvirs, Lepidus, and his tippling aboard Pompey's ship is amusing. Lee Richardson's Enobarbus is strangely disengaged from its context, and his voice is not musical enough for what are some of the most gorgeous passages ever penned. Michael Levin's Pompey, Steve Karp's Menas. Joseph Maher's Agrippa, and Joseph Lambie's Eros are among those who need more vocal guidance. Peter Thompson scores points as the once-bitten-talee shy Messenger, and Rosalind Harris is properly sweet as Octavia...
