...long trail to this assertion began unwinding in Love and Death in the American Novel (1960), in which Fied ler argued that the peculiar kink in American literature was an obsession with death; and that, in turn, inhibited a mature approach to heterosexual themes. As a result, literature fastened on a sublimated homosexual ideal, a kind of interracial buckskin-buddy system of innocent dreamers, running toward what Huck Finn called "the terri tory ahead." Actually, Fiedler said, the dreamers were fleeing from women...
There were no boos in San Fran cisco last week. Producer Paul Hager toned down some of the explicit sex and sociology of Hamburg's version, pointed up some of the opera's philo sophical overtones, and allowed Schul ler to reinstate a subtler ending, which the Hamburgers had cut. These modifications, and the new stage design -plus the impassioned singing of Bari tone Simon Estes in the lead - gave the story of a Negro lynching a harrowing touch of surrealism...
Platform for Action. Nor could Illinois' only L.B.J. neophyte, Gale Schis-ler, fend off the challenge of able G.O.P. State Legislator Tom Railsback. Ironically, the Illinois Democratic machine's only major victory was the election of Adlai Stevenson III, father-like son of the late Democratic presidential nominee, as state treasurer, by a hair-thin 30,758 votes?despite the fact that the party bosses had asked Stevenson to run for the post only because Senator Paul Douglas thought that the Stevenson name would help him in his own race...

The finalists: bowlegged, two-time Champion Chuang Tse-tung, 23, a student at Peking's University of Physical Culture (one of few schools in the world that gives a degree in Ping-Pong), and Challenger Li Fu-jung, 22, who resembles a pint-sized Gregory Peck. Li was the crowd favorite. Often laying back as far as 20 ft. from the table, he brought gasps of astonishment from the crowd...
...Ernest Beutler has concocted a reagent solution into which he puts a single drop of blood. The solution (which contains methylene blue) is blue. Blood from normal, healthy subjects turns it red within half an hour. But one of the 24 apparently healthy subjects whose blood Dr. Beut ler tested turned out to be abnormal: she was apparently a carrier of the recessive gene for galactosemia, for her blood took an hour to turn the solution red. A drop of blood from a galactosemic baby, who has inherited a double dose of the defective genes, one from each parent, will...
