...PATRIOT FOR ME. When John Osborne steps into the spotlight and throws a nightlong temper tantrum, the dramatic results are explosively and corrosively alive. But when he goes rummaging through history for his theme, he is far less successful. This play is about Alfred Redl, a homosexual officer in the army of the decaying Austro-Hungarian Empire who was blackmailed by the Russians into turning traitor. Unfortunately, Osborne's characters are not immersed in history; they merely wear it like a costume...
...Less immediate, but no less fascinating to those involved, were the weeks of work necessary to produce such color spreads as Morocco, the latest In resort, Normandy on the 25th anniversary of Dday, the new nude look in fashion and Venice besieged by the elements. "One of the greatest services we can render," says Baker, "is to grab a subject like oceanography or lasers, which don't instantly suggest color, and illuminate a whole area that might otherwise be buried in scientific texts." And sometimes, too, there are those subjects which suggest nothing but color-such as the rainbow...
...hurried meeting in Washington and voted to exclude businessmen and politicians from the speakers' platform for the Washington rally. Too many such men, they argued, had either profited from or approved war appropriations. When Moratorium leaders heard of the action, they met with some of Mobilization's less radical leaders and argued forcefully that such a move would alienate all the politicians and average citizens who had been recruited by M-day. They won the argument. Both groups held press conferences to announce that each supported the other's November plans...
...proceed, then, with the understanding that it may not be a counter culture forever. In the long run, it could conceivably found the culture of post-technocratic, post-Western man. This consideration should not make people in the counter-culture self-righteous and oracular; but it should make them less flippant about what they are doing. Their experiments and explorations have barely begun. They cannot be allowed to stagnate or degenerate. The people in the counter have to assume a new intentness in their quest for human happiness, and a new earnestness in their vision of what will...
From what I can remember of the Moratorium Day CRIMSON editorial in question, it subscribed more or less to the "radical theory" of American imperialism; i. e., to the view that there is a consistent pattern running through American interventions in such places as Greece, Lebanon, Iran, Guatemala, Vietnam, Dominican Republic-a pattern of suppression of elements that are unfriendly to American businesses, propose radical land reform, threaten "stability" (a stability favoring the "haves"), or are anti-American (or even dangerously non-aligned). American foreign policy is seen as motivated largely by a desire for profits and, related to this...
