...suspect you might be coming down with something. That's a tall order but not impossible. In the mid-1990s the German drug company Boehringer-Ingelheim developed an antiviral molecule, dubbed BIRR 4, that proved in clinical trials to significantly shorten most colds triggered by rhinoviruses and lessen their severity. The product worked by mimicking those molecular footholds used by rhinoviruses to gain entry into human cells. Spraying the nasal passages every few hours on the first day of a cold essentially fooled the virus into leaving the cells alone...
Bush made friends and allies by proposing $600 million in funding for drug treatment and $450 million for over a million disadvantaged American students. He proposed $1.2 billion for research into hydrogen-fueled cars, which would presumably be better for the environment and lessen our dependence on oil. And the $12 billion he promised for AIDS research can potentially ease the suffering of millions of people. But the extent of these proposals are miniscule next to Bush’s budget cuts. In effect, they are just sugar-coating a nonsensical and unfair economic platform that will disproportionately benefit...

...brain by inducing a seizure. (Despite ECT's lurid reputation, it involves mild doses of current and can be almost miraculously successful in patients whose depression will not yield to drugs.) Even old-fashioned, low-tech talk therapy can help adjust a patient's brain chemistry and lessen the severity of depression, especially in conjunction with other treatments...
...complex electrochemical interactions within and between nerve cells. The disembodied voices of schizophrenia and the feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred that accompany depression, although they seem to be based on reality, are no more than distortions in brain electrochemistry. Researchers are learning how these distortions arise, how to lessen their severity and, in some cases, how to correct them...
