...half truths and colored prose seem to completely obviate Mr. Norris' call for an "analytical and candid approach" to the present political campaign. Let Mr. Norris take a lesson from Mr. Stevenson who, in referring to President Eisenhower's truth campaign, said "Let the truth begin at home." Arthur T. Anderson...

...First Rumblings. Presumably, the lesson of The Early Churchills is how Nobodies may become Somebodies if they have the right stuff in them. The very early Churchills were so obscure that Author Rowse dispatches five centuries of them in eight pages. One such was apparently a plain 12th century blacksmith, whose presence in the family tree the present Sir Winston has found "disquieting." The blacksmith's son married a widow a cut above him, and by dint of a few generations of such nimble marriages, the Churchills became gentry, landed but impoverished. The clan's private golden...

Chemistry Lesson. A major drawback in the past to demineralizing water by freezing has been the cost. Zarchin's apparatus tries to beat this drawback by supplementing freezing with distillation by vapor compression. Sea water is pumped into a low-pressure chamber where a part of it is turned into vapor; part is frozen; the remainder passes off as a concentrated brine. The vapor is then slightly compressed. This process turns the vapor into pure water and also generates enough heat to melt the pure ice crystals...

...could purify up to 80% of the sea water that enters his apparatus, claims a $10 million plant could turn out 1,000 gals, of fresh water per hour for 2? a cubic meter, less than half the present cost of water in the Negev. Zarchin's lesson may be a major political development in the thirsty Middle East. Huddled over his books last week in a stuffy Tel Aviv hotel room, Zarchin had no doubt of the outcome. "You'll see," he said quietly. "I'm no nudnik...
