Even if governments are gung-ho, regulators aren't so sure. In late May, the European Commission forced Prague to tone down its proposed $16 million free wi-fi initiative by stripping out full Internet access and providing only public-service websites, lest it distort competition. "Investment in broadband networks is primarily a matter for private companies," E.U. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said after completing a probe that held up the project for months. Typically freshmen were pressured by their advisers not to take two seminars lest concentration requirements be neglected. The head of the Freshman Seminar program herself offered such advice to one of my students: Though she undoubtedly believed she had his interests in mind, her counsel of course undermined the integrity and continuity of my own efforts. The Freshman Seminar committee suggested, indeed, that I approach the new Humanities program, but the latter replied last spring that no new courses were welcome and the faculty had not yet decided anything about the future...

It helps most of all that Oz, the sometime Sesame Street puppeteer (and, lest we forget, the man behind Yoda) is in charge. He's always been a terrific farceur (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, In and Out, Bowfinger) and he's at the top of his game here, a master at showing actors how to take the most appalling pratfalls while maintaining their deadpan dignity...

...vehicles - a good portion of the entire U.S. inventory of tanks, helicopters, armored personnel carriers, trucks and humvees - are now in Iraq. They are spread across 15 bases, 38 supply depots, 18 fuel-supply centers and 10 ammo dumps. These items have to be taken back home or destroyed, lest they fall into the hands of one faction or another. Pentagon officials will try to bring back as much of the downtime gear as possible - dining halls, office buildings, vending machines, furniture, mobile latrines, computers, paper clips and acres of living quarters. William (Gus) Pagonis, the Army logistics chief...
