...pedestrian paradise. I walked for blocks without one person bumping me. For the first time, I noticed a letterbox near a bus stop because there were no bus riders crowded around it. Where were the tourists asking me for directions to Covent Garden? Where were the crimson trails of double-decker buses that brighten London's streets? I think a lot of east Londoners decided to take a well-deserved summer Friday off. As for me, I made it to the office in 30 minutes, and thanked the skies it wasn?t raining. -Jene? Darden

It depicts a wanjina - a mysterious ancient figure painted on cave walls in Australia's remote northwest. ...figure of a lone rider, shimmering in the distance like a mirage; the long convoys of Bedouin warriors, dwarfed by the sea of sand--all of these, seen in 70-mm and magnificently accompanied in stereo by Maurice Jarre's glittering music, are worlds away from the reduced-version, letterbox format to which they've been downgraded, albeit unavoidably, on video. The desert cinematography isn't as sensuously poetic as that of "The English Patient," which has evoked comparisons; but there's a stark grandeur to its vision that suits the nature of the story far better...
