...course, Tufts is a relatively small college whose football fortunes in the last two years have been on the decline. Coach Harry Arianson has switched his offense from a straight T to a wing T, and has only 18 returning lettermen to run it. Tufts has left 15 games and won only 5 in its rivalry with the Crimson, and the Jumbos lost their opening game to Bowdoin last week 14-0 last Saturday. Of course...

Hitting Targets. The experts picked Notre Dame to win by 41 points. True, Purdue has 24 lettermen back from last year's team - but last year's team lost to Notre Dame 34-15. Purdue had walloped Miami of Ohio 38-0 in its season opener, but Notre Dame had beaten a bigger school (California) by a bigger score (48-6). And Mollenkopf had to admit that his running attack stood little chance against an Irish defensive line that averaged 225 Ibs. per man. "We'll have to pass," he said. "I'd sure hate...

Even without Archie Roberts, Columbia should have little difficulty clobbering Lafayette. The Lions have 19 returning lettermen and Buff Donelli says this is the most experienced team he's had in years. Columbia still won't be able to win many games in Ivy circles, but Lafayette (a 40-0 victim to Colgate last week) is relying too heavily on sophomores to be much of a danger this early in the season...

This battle of the have-nots is the most inscrutable game of the week involving an Ivy team. Lehigh has only 12 lettermen returning, has won two games in the last two years, and has beaten the Quakers only twice in 32 meetings. Penn has had five straight losing seasons, and may have trouble adjusting to the T-formation. But the Quakers have the largest group of returning lettermen in the League, headed by All-Ivy fullback Bruce Molloy. Experience plus Molloy's running and kicking ability should equal a narrow victory...

Before the game, Parseghian, who practically invented the crying towel, acted as though he could not possibly understand why his Fighting Irish were two-touchdown favorites. "Cal has 24 lettermen back," he warned, "plus a lot of junior-college transfers and a fine group of sophomores." Very funny. Quarterback Zloch ran for two touch downs and passed 24 yds. to Halfback Nick Eddy for a third. Safety Man Nick Rassas intercepted three Cal passes. The first string spent most of the fourth quarter relaxing on the bench, as Notre Dame, sticking to the ground and only once bothering to punt...
