Before this letter was sent, however, Mr. Alfred Cowles, the old Yale oarsman went to the summer home of Professor Ames at Castine, to confer with him further upon the question. Professor Ames repeated to Mr. Cowles the substance of what he had said to Mr. Adee, and refused to make any overtures to Yale in the matter. He felt that Yale must send an invitation to Harvard to meet her in football, before Harvard could agree to play.
