Goldin-Meadow and Rowe's study involved children from 50 Chicago-area families of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Annual incomes ranged from less than $15,000 to more than $100,000, and parents' educational level ranged from high school dropout to advanced degree. The researchers videotaped each child at 14 months with his or her primary caregiver (the mother, in 49 out of 50 kids) for 90 minutes while the pair engaged in everyday activities. Those tapes were then transcribed - all speech and gestures seen during the 90 minutes were noted and recorded in code. (See pictures...
...painful adjustments that are taking place are not avoidable," says David Blankenhorn, founder and president of the Institute for American Values, a New York City think tank that for the past few years has made an obsession of thrift. "Wringing debt out of our economy at every level is a painful and inevitable process, and it isn't going to be solved by charging more things at the supermarket...

I'm not complaining...

When it comes to climate change, we are both sinners before the Lord. This state of parity, however accidentally it may have been arrived at, presents a new psychological climate where the kind of equal partnership for which the Chinese have long yearned seems possible...
...gorgeous tale of a hapless admirer of music and art, destined never to create, only to consume. It is, in a sense, the picture the band’s detractors might paint of them. They acknowledge the issue, and in doing so, seek to move above it, displaying a level of forethought that suggests they are more than a glorified cover band.On the whole, they manage to compensate for the exhaustion that can come from such a poppy record, and generally, they demonstrate the intentionality they strived for. The songs’ twee inclinations contrast with the distortion of guitars...
