...architect, John L. Kingston of Warren & Whetmore, started with the idea of a good sized building constructed, theoretically, high up in the air. Then he planned downward to the street level, spreading lower stories to get the "setback" effect which gives tall buildings the maximum of light...
...terror of aviation. At the speed of plane flight (100 m.p.h., usually) a pilot loses his sense of balance. At night or in fog, where he cannot orient himself against ground objects, he flies to one side, his wings tilt, the plane goes up, down or, happily, level. He does not know. His instruments go "hay wire." He is helpless. In terror he may try to guide himself. Generally that is useless. Experienced professional pilots, particularly on the night mail routes, often set their planes at neutral, take their hands off the controls, fold their arms and apathetically wait...
...unfortunately Dr. Davison's performance has been uncompromising in its idealism. Thus far, he has failed to educate the general public up to the level of his chorus. He has proved that the term "college glee club" does not necessarily imply the group of barber shop choristers of a decade ago; but, he has proved these things only to a small group of more or less sophisticated music lovers, whose appreciation already educated to the level of classic music is reached to the height of satisfaction...
From the outset, therefore, we had no doubts as to the purpose and possibility of this professional school. It should seek to train business executives and be satisfied with nothing less. Otherwise it forfeits its right to stand on the same level with the older professional schools. Its graduates must of course, start in the lower ranks and many may never reach the highest commands. Over their heads will often pass, though perhaps less frequently in the future, gritty, gifted men from the lowest ranks. A progressive society must follow Napoleon's maxim of "careers open to talent." But accumulating...
Graf's Future. The Graf Zeppelin was built for demonstration purposes. It is aerodynamically imperfect. Because it is a cylinder with conic ends, air does not flow smoothly over it. It should have no straight surface lines or level planes as in the Los Angeles, "best product of the Zeppelin works" (Dr. Eckener). Building of a new Friedrichshafen hangar will be completed about Nov. , when construction of a huge, fattish dirigible will be begun. Imperfect, the Graf Zeppelin will never be put on a commercial line. It will be used as a training ship for dirigible crews, for excursions...
