It is unfortunate that the Dowlings did not perceive the opportunity which the grates provided as one allowing us to offer service to others less fortunate than ourselves. We have few opportunities of this sort in life, certainly far too few to waste through poor judgement. More creative solutions to the reported security risk posed by the homeless could have been developed through involvement of the Leverett community. Without question, the homeless should be allowed to sleep on the grates behind Leverett House, and the University's decision to bar them is repugnant. However, the general outcry that has ensued is both self-righteous and insipid. The homeless crisis requires tough answers and sacrifice. The real question is not one of steam vents, but of our responsibility. Are we responsible for the homeless? If we are truly committed to the homeless then we must raise taxes to build low income housing. We must supply halfway houses and counseling services. We must supply job training and job opportunities...
Recently there has been much furor over the installation of grates over the hot air vents behind the Leverett House dining hall. Students and community members are outraged at the callousness that Harvard has shown the unfortunates who must resort to using our excess heat to survive. However, I believe that more people are upset about the cruelly symbolic aspect and unseemliness of the grates themselves, rather than the underlying problems of the security of students and the plight of the homeless...
