...parsing his semi-annual testimony on matters economic in front of the House and Senate was usually a pointless exercise. The financial world was like a stockbroker on a cocaine jag - euphoric and volatile and throwing cash around like, well, a stockbroker on a cocaine jag. Greenspan saved his lever-pulling for Fed meetings and put the lawmakers to sleep with boilerplate. The only real payoff to watching was to see how barely Lord Alan disguised his bemusement at the questions posed after his prepared remarks...

Zoellick thinks he can lever almost anyone into a deal by preying on the fear of being left out. Last month, for instance, he wanted to speed up Brazil's march to free trade. But local politics were holding that up. So instead of flying to Sao Paulo, Zoellick flew to Santiago, where he inked a deal with Chile. ...Something can go wrong with all of them. In New York, voters complained that some switches on their lever machines were stuck, or broken off. On the optical-scan device, some voters make an X or something instead of filling in the circle, and their vote isn't picked up by the machine. As we know, absentee ballots can be confusing...
