Career: His father Levi, descendant of Nathaniel Dickinson, Massachusetts settler of 1630, migrated to Iowa after the Civil War, bought land at $1 per acre, sold it for $6, became a well-to-do husbandman. His son did farm chores, attended common school, grew tall and solid. Ambitious, he helped pay his way through Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) which graduated him in 1898.
