...Barrymore Gaddess of Greenwich, Conn. Somehow Hearst's Evening Journal had got hold of the transcript of Husband Gaddess' divorce proceedings, which were heard by a horrified referee in private chambers. It included 443 dictaphone records of telephone conversations between Jack & Mrs. Gaddess. The referee considered them "lewd in thought beyond belief . . . greater evidence of depravity than the actual commission of the acts." With insinuations that most of the conversations were unprintable, the Journal delightedly printed some 20 columns.* Sample...

Journeyman is limited to 1,475 numbered copies. Probable reason for this publishing tactic is fear of Vice Suppressor John S. Sumner, who had the Viking Press haled before Magistrate Benjamin Greenspan more than a year ago on a charge that God's Little Acre was lascivious, lewd, indecent. Judge Greenspan, a liberal, failed to see eye to eye with Mr. Sumner, dismissed the charge. But the Viking Press prefers to be cautious with Journeyman. It is possible, should the Legislature see fit, to stop this practice [of nudism] and I think it should...

...patterned closely after the New York State law, this decision will undoubtedly serve as a model and precedent for the rest of the States." The nudist decision had immediate effect in Manhattan where seven chorus girls and two managers of a burlesque show were on trial charged with lewdly producing a Hawaiian dance number. As he freed the group, the magistrate declared: "By common acceptance a Hawaiian dance is not an indecent performance. The arresting officer testified that the dance did not arouse lecherous desires. Nudity, partial or complete, is not in itself lewd...

...good clean fun on board ship in "The Captain Hates The Sea," makes us wonder how we ever withstood the lewd sallies of Will Housen movies. Leon Errol, Alison Skipworth, Helen Vinson, Victor McLaglen, and John Gilbert make up an able cast. The captain's uncanny urge to dip beards into soup by pushing the elbows that support them adds a tenseness which is truly genuine. The head steward aware of this weakness forces a passenger to sit next to the captain who provides him with the beard-elbow-soup combination which he is unable to resist. John Gilbert...
