Instead, Harvard's attitude toward drinking is prompted more by a concern for the wellness of its undergraduates, who, Lewis says, are not often in the position to distinguish between responsible and irresponsible drinking.
"Students' safety and wellbeing are my primary concern, and all the unhappy consequences and accompaniments of abusive drinking," Lewis wrote.
In other council news, Michael D. Shumsky '00 announced that the Committee on House Life (CHL)--a body made up of five council members and four House Masters chaired by Dean of the College Harry R. Lewis '68--had voted to endorse universal key-card access.
When asked why Lewis wanted the approval of House committees when CHL had voted unanimously to approve universal keycard access, Shumsky said he "had no idea."
"Harvard was not by any means an obvious place for him to end up," said Dean of the College Harry R. Lewis '68. "He was able to view and comment on the Harvard scene with a tremendous amount of insight and good humor."
