...father if her mother's first fiance hadn't been kept so long overseas in the Navy, thus giving her dad his chance with her. Here's what McDermott has to say about that: "Those of us who claim exclusivity in love do so with a liar's courage: there are a hundred opportunities, thousands over the years, for a sense of falsehood to seep in, for all that we imagine as inevitable to become arbitrary, for our history together to reveal itself as only a matter of chance and happenstance, nothing irrepeatable or irreplaceable, the circumstantial mingling of just...

...G.O.P. cloakroom was about a more awkward judgment: What to do about Bill Clinton's State of the Union speech Tuesday night? Almost a year to the day after the Monica Lewinsky story first broke, a disgraced President is on trial in one chamber of Congress, being called a liar, a cheat and a threat to the rule of law, while in the other he will stand and claim credit for the best year in a half-century, and the audience will rise and shout amen. Director Tom Shadyac's other films (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective; The Nutty Professor; Liar Liar) are bright, off-kilter farces; scripter Steve Oedekerk wrote Professor. It is a crime against humority that they and Williams (who in a chair next to Letterman is still our most brilliant word surrealist) renounce the work they've practiced with such abandon and invention for Patch's bullying sentimentality. Comics who want to do Hamlet often end up, as here, serving big, sticky slices...

...Judas!" taunted one dissatisfied listener. "I don't believe you," Dylan sneers back, hauntingly echoing the words of an earlier song, "you're a liar". If not for this exchange, Dylan's performance might have been regarded as merely a dissatisfaction to the audience, rather than pure treachery. To them, Bob Dylan was supposed to be the protector of the "Old Guard" against Rock and Roll, a crusader for the rights of the common people through his songs--the liner notes suggest that this concert marked him as "a traitor to the proletariat cause...
