...When John Edwards joined the ticket as the vice-presidential nominee in the summer, the campaign could have used the North Carolina Methodist much in the same way that Al Gore's campaign dispatched Joseph Lieberman to engage religious voters in 2000. Edwards carried with him a leather-bound copy of The Purpose-Driven Life, a popular devotional book by the Evangelical author and megachurch pastor Rick Warren. Edwards' copy was worn from daily reading, a discipline he shared with tens of millions of other Americans who owned the book...

Hours and hours of hearings finally led to a legislative breakthrough in December: the passage out of the committee of the first bill that would put carbon caps on the U.S. economy. Co-sponsored by the Republican Sen. John Warner and the Independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the America's Climate Security Act would cap U.S. carbon emissions at 15% below 2005 levels by 2020, with a 70% cut projected for 2050. Just as importantly, the legislation calling for carbon-emission caps - co-sponsored by the independent Senator Joseph Lieberman and the Republican Senator John Warner - passed the first hurdle to becoming law. Bush has always opposed mandatory carbon caps and could veto the bill. But with climate change becoming a bigger issue in this year's presidential and congressional elections, even Bush might find it hard to do that...

...instead of spending seven to nine billion dollars a month in Iraq, we put seven to nine billion dollars a year into this, there would be a stunning output.” Kerry said that while he is working with like-minded colleagues—notably Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.)—to pass bills to reduce carbon emissions, the fact that no law has emerged from Congress reflects the power of interests working against the legislation. He said that there is a “powerful set of arguments?...
