Determined to get the suits in working order for the maiden voyage of the new orbiter Challenger in January, the chief of the shuttle program, Air Force Lieut. General James Abrahamson, ordered a panel headed by NASA Engineer Richard Colonna to examine the suits, literally stitch by stitch. Its provisional finding: "Egregious oversights"-to use the words of one of the investigators-by the prime contractor, the Hamilton Standard division of United Technologies Corp., and by a key subcontractor, Carleton Controls Corp., a subsidiary of Moog Inc. By implication, the report also faulted the space agency...

Another contradiction in testimony involved Begin. Hanan Bar-On, deputy director-general of the Foreign Ministry, had previously testified that on Friday evening, Sept. 17, he had called the Prime Minister's aide-de-camp, Lieut. Colonel Azriel Nevo, to pass along an American diplomat's report of trouble in the refugee camps. Last week Nevo testified that, "as far as I can remember," he had not even talked with Bar-On that Friday. Asked Kahan: "BarOn did not speak with you that evening?" Replied Nevo: "Did not speak. He says that he called me at my home...

Lieut. Colonel Ze'ev Zeharin, an aide to Chief of Staff Rafael Eitan, testified that he was "100% sure" Sharon first spoke on Tuesday evening, Sept. 14, two days before the massacre began, about the plan for Lebanese Christian militiamen to enter the Palestinian camps. Sharon had testified that he first broached the subject on the following day. Zeharin also said Eitan had told him that...

...protective tiles showed pits and bruises. Dark streaks lined the fuselage, and a tire was flat, apparently worn down by the friction of a wheel that locked on landing. Casting a baleful eye on the craft that has logged 10.8 million miles on five voyages, Air Force Lieut. General James Abrahamson, director of NASA'S shuttle program, commented, "It's beginning to look more like a used spaceship all the time." But his words were more of a compliment than a criticism. By successfully completing its first operational flight, Columbia showed convincingly that the often maligned $10 billion...
