...officer, Lieut. Colonel Dale Duncan, 39, was indicted on seven counts last week by a federal grand jury in Alexandria, Va. He was charged with submitting vouchers for $56,230 for the purchase of electronic equipment in August 1982, even though an Army intelligence agency had already paid for the same gear. Duncan also allegedly submitted a bill for $8,400, to charter a private aircraft, that had already been almost entirely paid for. The indictment claims as well that Duncan charged the Army $796 for a four-flight airline ticket that he got free through a frequent-flyer program...

...every veteran's nightmare. The battle has long been over, and the honorable discharge is gathering dust in the attic. Then word comes: the ex-soldier has been recalled to active duty. In this case he is former Lieut. Ben Tyson, whose company once massacred civilians in a covered-up atrocity bearing more than a coincidental resemblance to the one at My Lai. When an investigative journalist reveals damning new evidence, Tyson is hauled before a court-martial on charges of mass murder. Is he guilty? Will a military tribunal be more vindictive than civilian justice? Can any circumstances mitigate...

...case of Herbert vs. Lando has taken another twist, one that has press defenders crowing instead of complaining. Last week the U.S. Court of Appeals in New York simply tossed the libel suit out of court. It had begun more than a decade ago, when Lieut. Colonel Anthony Herbert sued CBS, 60 Minutes Producer Barry Lando and Correspondent Mike Wallace for a 1973 broadcast questioning the Colonel's claim that he had been drummed out of the Army for reporting war crimes to his superiors. In a 43-page opinion, Judge Irving R. Kaufman, a member of the three-judge...

...honor to attend the recent graduation from West Point of my nephew, 2nd Lieut. Chad T. Fifield. Your article captured the sacrifice those young men and women are willing to make for our country. In this age of self-gratification and materialism, it is nice to see young people who exemplify the ideals that make our country great. I am sure that the U.S.'s future is in good hands with institutions like West Point producing our future leaders. Jeffrey E. O'Neil Chanhassen, Minnesota...

...Controversial Death The armed forces of the Philippines welcome the candid reporting in Anthony Spaeth's "Under the Gun" [May 9]. However, we are troubled by Mr. Spaeth's unfair use of the memory of the late Lieut. Colonel Dennis Villaneuva, a fine gentleman-officer. The article quips that Villaneuva's death is a "mystery worth pursuing," and asks, "Was Dennis Villaneuva a casualty of his employer's shoddiness?" Zeroing in on the facts, the cause of death was a heart attack secondary to massive organ malfunction due to severe loss of blood and/or bodily fluids. He died after...
