...thing, because HemisFair '68, which last week opened its six-month run, gives a big lift to the civic pride of San Antonio, long a sleepy city (pop.: 755,550) at the edge of the Texas hill country, previously noted mainly as the site of the Alamo. For another, it stimulates tourism: officials estimate conservatively that, during HemisFair, 7,500,000 people will visit San Antonio and will spend $35 million there...

...Saturn 5 lifted off its Cape Kennedy launching pad with dramatic precision last week, ground controllers had visions of a repeat of last November's near-perfect maiden flight of the giant rocket. Their optimism was premature. Only six minutes after lift off, Saturn encountered the first of a series of troubles that may cause a delay of months in landing the first astronauts on the moon...

...been clear for some months now that the bird of Wall Street is the dove. So it was no real surprise last week when new hope for peace in Viet Nam gave the stock market an exuberant lift. A paroxysm of trading twice shattered daily volume records on the New York Stock Exchange and sent share prices up enough to erase a third of the past winter's losses. The plane can fly faster and farther than any earlier U.S. fighter-bomber and lift twice the bomb load (12,500 Ibs.). Its great strategic importance in Viet Nam was to be that its new inertial guidance and radar targeting system enables it to bomb in foul weather or fair, either by night or by day. Its arrival in force would thus mean that the U.S. could keep up its aerial bombardment of the North despite monsoon rains or heavy cloud cover...

Under the Net. The F-111 is the world's first combat plane with the so-called "variable geometry" wing, which extends for greater lift during takeoff and landing, folds back for less drag at supersonic speeds. Its "terrain radar," which automatically adjusts the plane's altitude to accord with the topography, is supposed to enable the plane to hug the ground while flying at a speed of 900 m.p.h. and thus dash in below the enemy radar net. If the first F-111 did hit a mountain, it was probably due to a malfunction in the terrain...
