...jolt of hope and renewed self-esteem through Hispanic communities across the country. As the news about the film has spread, Olmos and Escalante have become role models for millions of Hispanic Americans, living proof that with the requisite amount of what Escalante calls ganas (desire), they can lift themselves out of the barrio and become teachers, mathematicians, movie stars -- anything they want. Olmos is "very inspirational, a real hero to the Hispanic community," observes Producer Moctesuma Esparza (The Milagro Beanfield War, The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez). Even as NASA worries about safety, it must take many calculated risks. In May, for example, agency officials had to make a decision about a potential danger if a flight had to be aborted shortly after lift-off. What would happen, asked NASA analysts, if one or more of the valves that allow the liquid fuels to flow from the external tank into the orbiter's main engines failed to shut after the tank was jettisoned? They're the ones who whine constantly about the lack of sugar and other things but do not lift a finger to stop those who want to kill perestroika. It is time people understood that there are not two separate perestroikas -- one material and one political. Without defending democracy, there's no point in demanding democracy...

Last year, Harvard decided to remove asbestos from only one floor of William James Hall rather than the whole building. Administrators say that the asbestos--which is found above every ceiling in the 15-story building--does not pose a health hazard, provided employees do not lift the ceiling panels. But a number of building occupants remain concerned...
