Rude Interruption. Disregarding the inevitable, the Nationalist government pushed ahead with plans for a last-ditch stand. All ordnance plants in the Shanghai-Nanking area, much light industry and operational headquarters of civil and military airlines were being moved to Taiwan and Canton. ...Light from Russia. Foreigners who keep track of the claims, and the prodigal expenditure of newspaper space on them, are inclined to doubt that they are signs of nationalism. These days Communism is in an internationalist mood and the claims of the Russian propagandists are widely pushed abroad. The purpose may be to convince prospective foreign proselytes that Russia, through the years, has been a source of scientific light and not (as was generally the case) a dismal swamp of scientific darkness. When Rudolph came into the world, in 1858, his father promptly made him a colonel of Hungarian Light Infantry, and before he was six years old, put him in the care of a senior army officer. Sickly, timid Colonel Rudolph was toughened by being awakened at midnight with a fusillade of revolver shots; then he would be dragged outdoors in early morning and put through a drill. When he seemed to be growing interested in science and politics, he was turned over to a new "tutor" who introduced him to night life and sex. After he had thus contracted...
