...Transportation Command, he has been in the middle of dealing with the skyrocketing cost of oil. One way, he suggested, might be to return to a way of flying largely abandoned before the birth of both the Pentagon and the Air Force-balloons, blimps and dirigibles. "Lighter-than-air technology," Schwartz told a Philadelphia audience May 27, "has the promise of lifting large quantities with much less reliance on hydrocarbons." If that sounds unconventional to you, imagine how it sounds to former Air Force generals, many of whom are turning over in their cockpits at the prospect...
...actually sitting in the same theater I am. In fact, the show is notably lacking in sparkles, and garish is just about the last word I would use to describe the subtle and airy visual design. A gorgeous color palette of pastel blues, oranges and pinks. Translucent, lighter-than-air panels, billowing plastic waves, scepter-like deep-sea sculptures, which manage to convey not just one undersea world but a host of neighborhoods within that world. Costumes that manage to be both lush and witty - the exaggerated, bunched-crinoline hoop skirts on the court ladies, for example, made me laugh...

The lighter-than-air loops and disco-ball riffs seem a natural extension of Barnes’ always-circular tendencies as a hooksmith. Strands of melody that might have spiraled aimlessly in 1999 are effortlessly pulled into place...
...Hirschfeld," fellow cartoonist Jules Feiffer rightly opined, "The only glamour left in the theater is what Al brings to it. And he is to what he does what Astaire was to what he did. Al has the same effortlessness, the same grace, the same wit, and that lighter-than-air quality." True enough. Hirschfeld put motion and emotion in all his still-lifes, infused buoyancy and elan in a weighty Sunday newspaper - The New York Times, whose Arts and Leisure section he had adorned and, heaven knows, enlivened for three quarters of a century...
