...real find here is the ballet score Appalachian Spring, presented for the first time on disc in the version for 13 instruments (strings, woodwinds, piano) originally written for Martha Graham in 1944. Lighter and leaner than Copland's later scoring for full orchestra, this interpretation is an exquisite way to rehear - or meet - one of the homespun classics of 20th century American music...

Unlike dirigibles and other lighter-than-air ships, the Aerocrane gets only 40% of its lifting capacity from its helium-filled sphere. The rest comes from the rotation of its wings, which can be pitched as they whirl around to control ascent and descent. This gives the chopper-balloon a distinct advantage over traditional lighter-than-air ships, which must drop ballast or spill their gas when taking on or unloading any cargo. Yet because of the buoyancy provided by its supply of helium, the Aerocrane should be able to loft heavy cargo much more efficiently than a conventional helicopter...

...poky Aerocrane probably will never be practical as a people mover, but it could be economically put to other uses. Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, a strong advocate of lighter-than-air vehicles, is encouraging the Senate Aeronautical and Space Sciences Committee to study the potential of blimps, dirigibles and hybrid airships as bulk cargo transporters during hearings this summer. ...Museum of Science, the show is basic bring-the-kids. It has all the colorful optical illusions that I first encountered in the Tootsie Roll ads under "Metropolis Mailbag" in Superman comics: the same color seeming lighter or darker according to its background, a green, black and orange flag that makes you see red, white and blue when you look away. A prism breaks white light into the color spectrum, and a sodium vapor lamp turns everyone's skin yellow. There are lots of fun knobs to turn and fun buttons to push, and color TV excerpts from ZOOM...

...going to be hot." Sometimes it is uncanny how hot the subject can be. A pamphlet entitled "U.S. Prisons: Schools for Crime" was published in September 1971, just two weeks before the Attica revolt. Other timely topics have been impeachment and women's liberation, as well as lighter subjects like "body language" and the Beatles' lyrics. After describing a bloodless coup in Bolivia, one pamphlet suggested that students analyze the power structure of their schools as if they were going to stage a coup of their...
